In the Valley of Mist

Justine Hardy

In the Valley of Mist, Justine Hardy

Kashmir was once a haven for tourists and a land whose breath-taking beauty was likened to a corner of paradise until 1989 when Muajadeen fighters moved in from Afghanistan and militants took to the streets. The Dar family found themselves trying to lead ordinary lives whilst locked in a conflict zone. A friend of the Dars for many years, journalist Justine Hardy tells their story and the stories of many others like them who have witnessed terrible changes in their beloved homeland.

Through their eyes, we see the rise of religious intolerance, the fear of living in the shadow of violence, surviving religious segregation and military camps, as well as the bittersweet challenges of making a living, bringing up children and arranging weddings whilst attempting to envisage a future free from fear.

Justine Hardy is a journalist and documentary filmmaker with an international reputation. She lives in Kashmir, Delhi and London, and is the author of five books, of which Scoop Wallah and Goat: A Story of Kashmir and Notting Hill were serialised on BBC Radio 4.
